CAREER: Enhanced Power Generation in a Nanoscale-Gap Thermophotovoltaic Device due to Radiative Heat Transfer Exceeding the Blackbody Limit
نویسنده
چکیده
The objective of this research is to test the hypothesis that power generation in a nanoscale-gap thermophotovoltaic (TPV) device can be enhanced by a factor of 20 to 30, compared to conventional TPV systems, due to radiation heat transfer exceeding the blackbody limit. This hypothesis will be tested by measuring radiative heat fluxes and TPV performances in an experimental apparatus involving planar surfaces separated by a nanosize gap maintained via spring-like spacers.

Radiative heat transfer exceeding the blackbody limit between macroscale planar surfaces separated by a nanosize vacuum gap
Using Rytov's fluctuational electrodynamics framework, Polder and Van Hove predicted that radiative heat transfer between planar surfaces separated by a vacuum gap smaller than the thermal wavelength exceeds the blackbody limit due to tunnelling of evanescent modes. This finding has led to the conceptualization of systems capitalizing on evanescent modes such as thermophotovoltaic converters an...
متن کاملImpacts of propagating, frustrated and surface modes on radiative, electrical and thermal losses in nanoscale-gap thermophotovoltaic power generators
The impacts of radiative, electrical and thermal losses on the performances of nanoscale-gap thermophotovoltaic (nano-TPV) power generators consisting of a gallium antimonide cell paired with a broadband tungsten and a radiatively-optimized Drude radiator are analyzed. Results reveal that surface mode mediated nano-TPV power generation with the Drude radiator outperforms the tungsten radiator, ...

We study a near-field thermophotovoltaic system made of an InGaSb cell and a tungsten grating metamaterial emitter, in which magnetic polariton is excited to spectrally enhance near-field radiative transfer. Fluctuational electrodynamics incorporated with scattering matrix method and rigorous coupled-wave analysis is used to exactly calculate the spectral heat flux. The preliminary results show...
متن کاملComputational Study of Radiative and Convective Heat Transfer in a Cylindrical Combustion Chamber
In this paper, the effect of cold air on the fluid flow inside the cylindrical combustion chamber and its wall temperature distribution have been studied computationally, taking into account the effect of radiative heat transfer from hot gases. The results have been compared with the case that radiative heat transfer was neglected. It is observed that the reattachment length increases when incr...
متن کاملHarvesting Nanoscale Thermal Radiation Using Pyroelectric Materials
Pyroelectric energy conversion offers a way to convert waste heat directly into electricity. It makes use of the pyroelectric effect to create a flow of charge to or from the surface of a material as a result of heating or cooling. However, an existing pyroelectric energy converter can only operate at low frequencies due to a relatively small convective heat transfer rate between the pyroelectr...
